Lunch at Xin Cuisine Chinese Restaurant

We visitedXin Cuisine for lunch during a recent weekend. It was well patronised and it seemed that the restaurant had to turn away a few who had not made prior reservation.

In typical Chinese restaurant tradition, an appetizer would be served as soon as you are seated, but you would be charged for it. At Xin Cuisine we were served a small plate of deep fried bean curd skin drizzled with vinegar ($4). It was surprisingly enjoyable. Chinese tea would cost $3 per person.

Dim Sum

We had 2 dim sum items – xiao long bao ($6.80 for a basket of 3) and BBQ pork puff ($5.80 for 3 pieces).

The xiao long bao was quite ordinary. We thought it was not as juicy and tasty as those we had tried in other popular xiao long bao restaurants. The BBQ pork puff was very good. It had nice flaky pastry and the crushed macadamia nuts and sesame seeds provided crunchiness. The char siew fillings were delicious.

Soup and Vegetables

We ordered the Tomato Soup ($12), because it looked gorgeous in the menu, and the Eggplant ($8), because we thought we should eat some vegetables.

It is well accepted that in the case of profile photos on Tinder, or other online dating sites, people tend to use their best possible photos; which may mean some disparity between how the person would look in the profile photo and in real life. That would seem to be the case with menu photos too. The Tomato Soup we got at Xin Cusine was not half as good looking as the soup we saw on the menu. Luckily for us, it had personality. The soup was light and more savoury than tangy. The succulent tomato was filled with lotus seeds and other ingredients. The soup gave us a good time. For once we had no regret making our choice based simply on appearance.

Eggplant with pork floss is quite a common dish. The difference in the Xin Cuisine’s version was the use of Japanese miso sauce. The sweet savoury miso sauce complemented the eggplant and pork floss well. The mix of textures and flavours delivered a very palatable dish.

Dessert

We ordered the Chilled Mango Coulis with Hashima in Mini Pumpkin ($18) even though the price was beyond our usual budget for dessert – well because it looked very attractive, and we also rationalised that it would come with a pan fried red bean pancake.

The creamy sweet mango dessert was cold and refreshing and the pancake was delicious. We would start putting some money into our piggy bank so that we could order this dessert again.

On the whole, we had a good lunch at Xin Cuisine. The food was generally well presented, interesting and delectable. The new look of the Cantonese restaurant may not excite but the refreshed menu of Executive Chinese Chef Chan Shun Wong would make it worthwhile to visit Xin Cuisine Chinese Restaurant again.
