Siddhivinayak means ‘Ganesha who grants your wishes. The Temple was originally a square brick structure that was made into a huge temple by a richAgriwoman named Deubai Patil. Deubai Patil did not have a child so she built this grand temple so that Ganesha would grant the child to childless women.

There’s a Hanuman Mandir near Siddhivinayak Temple. During the road extension project of Sayani Road near Elphinston Road in Mumbai, the workers of the Municipal Corporation unearthed an idol of Shree Hanuman. Then, the idol was brought by the head priest of Siddhivinayak Temple and the temple was built.

About The Idol of Ganesha at Siddhivinayak Temple

The idol of Ganesha at Siddhivinayak Temple, Mumbai is carved out of a single black stone. Normally, the trunk of Ganesha is placed on the left side. Unusually, the trunk at Siddhivinayak temple is placed on the right side.

The upper right and left hands hold a lotus and axe. The lower right and left hands hold a ‘Modak’ and ‘Japmala. ‘ There’s an eye on the forehead of Ganesha which seems like the third of Lord Shiva.

There’s a sacred thread on the left shoulder and the right belly of Ganesha, which resembles a snake. There are two idols of Riddhi and Siddhi besides the idol of Ganesha, so the temple is popularly known as Siddhivinayak Temple. The goddess is the symbol of sanctity, success, wealth and prosperity.

Siddhivinayak Temple History

The history of Siddhivinayak Temple dates back to about 125 years ago when Ramakrishna Jambhekar Maharaj was the ardent disciple of Shri Akkalkot Swami Samarth. Also, Ramakrishna Jambhedkar Maharaj was the devotee of Lord Ganesha and Gayatri Mata.

Once, Ramakrishna was blessed with Siddhi. Swami Samarth asked Ramakrishna to bring some divine idols. Swami Samarth asked him to bury all idols except two in front of the courtyard of Shri Cholappa (another disciple of Swami Samarth).

The idols that Ramkrishna had that he was instructed to inhume under the Ganesha idol that he worshipped. Ramakrishna then predicted that a Mangar tree would grow there after 21 years and Ganesha would be worshipped at a sacred place.

The past records suggest there was a lake near the temple to meet water scarcity. Now, the lake is a playground and is a part ofKakasaheb Gadgil Marg. There was also a Dharamshala and a rest house for the owner.

The area started developing, the owner sold much of its land and thus the area of the temple was much reduced. Even then, the number of people visiting the Darshan of Siddhivinayak Temple has drastically increased.

Architecture of Siddhivinayak Temple

The temple has a small mandap with a shrine for Siddhi Vinayak. The wooden doors to the sanctum are carved with images of the Ashtavinayak (the eight manifestations of Ganesha in Maharashtra). The inner roof of the sanctum is plated with gold and the central statue is of Ganesha. In the periphery, there is a Hanuman temple as well.

The best time to visit the Siddhivinayak Temple to avoid crowds would probably be in the afternoons. If you just wish to do Darshan of Ganesha then you must visit when there would be no Aartis or Special Puja. You can also plan to visit on Wednesdays, as most of the devotees have already visited the temple on Tuesdays.
