Rishabh Pant's Test comeback is now shrouded in uncertainty after a series of painful blows during a recent match, leaving fans and the team holding their breath.
On November 8, 2025, the cricketing world watched with concern as Rishabh Pant, captain of India A, was forced to retire hurt during the second unofficial Test against South Africa A. This unsettling event occurred just days after Pant was announced as vice-captain for India's upcoming two-Test series against South Africa. The first Test is scheduled to begin in Kolkata on November 14, immediately raising questions about his fitness.
After India A resumed their second innings, Pant came to the crease, aiming to build on their lead. Unfortunately, his innings was marred by a series of blows from the South Africa A bowlers. Initially, he took a hit to the helmet while attempting an attacking stroke, which led to a quick check-up from the medical staff. Later, while defending, the ball inside-edged onto his left wrist, with the impact deflecting into his thigh pad. The physio re-entered the field to apply strapping to his wrist, but Pant continued to play, visibly uncomfortable.
And this is the part most people miss... Shortly after the wrist injury, Pant was also struck in the midriff while defending another delivery. Play was temporarily halted as he tried to recover. Despite India A's favorable position in the match, the captain's evident struggle led to the decision to retire him hurt, with Dhruv Jurel taking his place. At the time of his departure, India A was at 108 for 4, having added 30 runs in the morning session.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to release an official update on the severity of Pant’s injury. While a return later in the match is theoretically possible, depending on his condition, the timing of this incident is particularly critical. The BCCI had named Pant as vice-captain and first-choice wicketkeeper in the 15-member India squad for the two-Test series against South Africa, which begins at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on November 14, followed by the second Test in Guwahati from November 22.
Rishabh Pant's return to the Test setup was anticipated to significantly boost India's batting lineup and leadership. His unexpected exit in Bengaluru, just days before the first Test in Kolkata, raises doubts about his readiness for the assignment. The team management is now awaiting an assessment of the injury.
