Khalen Saunders, a former third-round pick of the Chiefs in 2019, has recently been released by the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Chiefs' defensive line star, Chris Jones, who successfully advocated for Mike Pennel's return a few weeks ago, is now leading the charge for Saunders' comeback. During a recent news conference, Jones made his intentions clear: "We've got to get my brother back."
In the Chiefs' locker room, Saunders' former teammates echoed Jones' sentiments. Linebacker Nick Bolton highlighted Saunders' contributions during the team's Super Bowl runs, emphasizing the value of having a familiar face with knowledge of the defense. "He's part of the family," added defensive end Mike Danna, who began his career alongside Saunders.
The need for Saunders' return became more apparent when Chiefs rookie defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott suffered a season-ending ACL tear in mid-October. Kansas City brought back Pennel to fill the void, and now, Saunders could be the next piece of the puzzle.
Both Saunders and Pennel are known for their ability to stop the run and provide an "energy boost" to the team, a term often used by head coach Andy Reid. According to Bolton, "They're a joy to be around, happy and focused."
