INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

The State University of New York at New Paltz has a century long tradition of providing an affordable and high quality education to international students. Today, more than 600 students, representing over 50 nations, play an important role in educational and cultural fabric of the SUNY New Paltz campus community.

Who is Considered an International Student?

Any student who is not a US citizen nor permanent resident of the United States is considered an international student and will require a non-immigrant visa to study legally in the United States.

TRANSCRIPT REQUIREMENTS

Official Transcripts: An official transcript is documentation of a student's permanent academic record including the courses that have been completed and the marks that have been received for those courses. If your school or national education department does not provide transcripts, please provide a certified record of the courses and examinations taken, This would include Government Examination certificates (such as GCSE-"O" Level, IGCSE, "A" Level).

Freshmen:If you graduated, or are about to graduate from a secondary/high school and have never matriculated/attended any universities, then you will be considered a freshman. You must submit official secondary/high school transcripts in the original language and in a translated English version (if applicable).

Transfers:If you were admitted and attended a college/university (inside or outside of the U.S.) you are considered a transfer student. You must submit:

  • official college/university transcripts from that college/university. If you attended more than one college/university, you must submit official transcripts from all colleges/universities.
  • high school transcript in both the original language and a translated English version (if applicable) if you have less than 45 completed college credits.
  • Foreign Course Evaluation:We recommend that transfer students obtain an evaluation of your non-US university transcript(s) in a course-by-course evaluation from a credential evaluation service that is a member in good standing with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Service (NACES). You can visitwww.naces.org for information about these services.

STANDARDIZED TESTS & ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY INFORMATION

SUNY New Paltz does not require the SAT, ACT or TOEFL as part of the admission decision process; however, providing the scores from either the SAT, ACT or TOEFL can be helpful in making the admission decision and can also be important in establishing English proficiency and proper course placement.

Recommended score levels:

  • SAT - Score between 1090 - 1600 (pre-March 2016 SAT), 1160 - 1600 (post-March 2016 SAT) (Critical Reading & Mathematics)
  • ACT - Score between 24-36
  • TOEFL - iBT score of 80 or better
  • IELTS - score of 6.5 or better (no sub-scores lower than 6.0)

ESSAY REQUIREMENT

A personal essay is required. The essay that is a required part of the SUNY Supplemental Application or the Common Application is acceptable.

FINANCIAL DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) requires evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of an international student's academic program. Original financial/bank statements indicating sufficient funds are required to support one's education at SUNY New Paltz for a period of at least one year. Bank statements amounts should total no less than $39,000(USD). Financial documentation must be in English and must be in United States Dollars (USD), or shown at the applicable conversion rate.

Submit theSUNY Foreign Student Financial Formwith original financial documents verifying the availability of funding for undergraduate study in the United States.

PASSPORT & VISA REQUIREMENTS

Submit a copy of your valid passport from home country.

Submit a copy of your valid student visa if you are currently in the U.S..

Freshmen - May 1

Transfer - May 1

Art/Visual Art Education - April 15

SPRING ENROLLMENT*

Freshmen - May 1

Transfer - December 1

Art/Visual Art Education - October 15

*SUNY New Paltz reserves the right to alter application due dates without notice.

ADMISSION DECISION PROCESS

After the completed application and all required documentation has been received and reviewed, an admission decision will be made.

Applicants who are accepted will receive written notification of their acceptance with the Pre-Enrollment Deposit (PED) invoice.

Accepted applicants arerequiredto return the Pre-Enrollment Deposit (PED) and Advance Room Deposit (ARD) of $250 USD to the SUNY New Paltz Office of Student Accounts through your admission status portal.

Upon receipt of the PED & ARD, the SUNY New Paltz international student advisor will forward accepted applicants an enrollment information packet, including the I-20 Certificate of Eligibility for F-1 Student Status.
