Intro

Our Degree Apprenticeship in Real Estate will give the experience, training and support you need to become a future Land Buyer or Land Manager. As a Land Buyer or Land Manager, you’ll source the best land in the right locations, helping us to create great homes with a positive legacy.

Our Land and Planning teams identify and assess development opportunities in a competitive and fast-paced field. From greenfield garden villages to smaller brownfield regeneration projects, you’ll negotiate with sellers to get the best possible deal. Key duties will involve identifying and appraising new opportunities; analysing target locations; working collaboratively with local planning authorities; assessing environmental constraints; and expanding the local contact base. From the land appraisal and bid process to the purchase, planning application and pre-start on site, you’ll work closely with the Sales, Technical and Commercial teams. You’ll also keep local communities informed and ensure that the developments are sustainable and have a positive long-term impact.

Land and Planning is a fast-moving environment, so you’ll need to be happy working at speed. Imaginative thinking and a strong business sense will be key to making sound decisions. You’ll need to be great at assessing risk, building relationships and solving problems.

Your university modules will provide academic teaching on best practice, regulation and everything an exceptional professional needs to master. By the time you’ve completed the programme, we hope you’ll be successfully purchasing new land. How will I develop?

You’ll join as a Trainee Land Buyer and start your journey along the land and planning department career pathway from day one alongside your academic studies. Promotion in the role is based on your performance on the job, and so even before you’ve completed your degree, we’d expect you to become a qualified Assistant Land Buyer or Land Buyer. From there, the future is yours. We’re an ageing workforce and one of our key reasons for creating this programme is to support people to become leaders of the future. That could be as a Senior Land Buyer, or into a Land Manager or Development Director role.

Professional Qualifications

We have submitted an application to the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) for the BSc (Hons) Professional Practice in Residential Real Estate, which you will acquire upon completion of your Degree Apprenticeship to be an accredited degree. We hope this process will be complete by December 2022. Subject to our application being accepted, if you are interested in becoming a chartered member of the RICS following completion of your degree, we will provide support and funding in helping you achieve this accreditation.

Entry

To join a Degree Apprenticeship, you must have a keen interest in customer expectation and commercial needs. It’s a big commitment: you’ll need manage real work in the office and on-site while furthering your education.

To qualify for a Degree Apprenticeship, you’ll need the following:

  • GCSEs (grade C or above or grades 4-9) in Maths, English and a science subject plus:
  • 112 UCAS points from at least two A levels or equivalent BTEC National qualifications. For example:
    - BBC at A Level
    - DMM in BTEC Extended Diploma
    - A combination of qualifications, which may include AS Levels, EPQ and general studies

We consider alternative qualifications on merit. These include a Level 3 Surveying Technician Apprenticeship, or a combination of qualifications and experience from an Armed Forces or other professional background.

Successful applicants will receive their offers from December onwards. From January onwards, you’ll begin an in-house training programme, equipping you with core and technical knowledge. This’ll take place with the Land and Planning team and other areas of business, plus rotations with specialist partners. Through training, you’ll earn the practical experience you need to achieve your Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) end point assessment. We’ll also help you prepare for University-eligibility activities.

This will include:

  • A university application
  • A self-assessment of your current knowledge, skills and behaviour
  • A functional skills review
  • A conversation with a Work-Based Learning Coach
