Baldur's Gate 3 Player Finds New Fail-Safes To Stop You Losing The Netherstones (2024)

Highlights

  • Baldur's Gate 3 content creator Proxy Gate Tactician has found some new fail-safes in the game that stop you from losing your Netherstones.
  • If you drop your Netherstones in the Iron Throne, a location you can't return to, Baldur's Gate 3 will put them in the inventory of either a random Sahuagin or a merchant called Old Troutman.
  • Larian even accounted for you killing these two before dropping your stone too, having a bloated fish wash up on shore which you can loot the Netherstones from.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has plenty of crucial items for you to keep track of, but the Netherstones are without a doubt something you don't want to lose, as you need to collect all three of them from Ketheric, Orin, and Gortash to beat the game. Despite being extremely important, Baldur's Gate 3 allows you to drop these stones wherever you like, and you're almost always rightfully scolded by The Emperor for dropping them willy-nilly.

Should you somehow drop one and lose it forever, your stupidity is often greeted with a game over cutscene of the Elder Brain turning your character into a Mind Flayer. There are rare occasions on which The Emperor will pop your Netherstones into your camp's chest for you, such as if you drop them in the Githyanki stronghold and enter Act 3, so we know the game does have a few fail-safes to ensure it's beatable.

Just how many fail-safes there are is still unknown, but a YouTuber called Proxy Gate Tactician recently set out to try and find as many as they could by dropping the Netherstones in locations you can't return to once you've finished your shenanigans. The Iron Throne in Act 3 is one such location, and upon dropping the stones and leaving the area, The Emperor gives you a good telling off and tells you to scour the nearest coast to see if they've washed up.

Baldur's Gate 3 Has A Wild Amount Of Fail-Safes To Stop You Losing Netherstones

If you visit the spot on the coast indicated by the new marker, you're greeted by a bunch of Sahuagin, which is an encounter that happens the first time you visit that area, no matter the circ*mstances. However, as Proxy Gate Tactician shows us, if you dropped your Netherstones in the Iron Throne before the fight, one of the Sahuagin will be holding them.

Not content to leave it there, Proxy Gate Tactician wanted to find out what would happen if you killed these Sahuagin before dropping your stones in the Iron Throne, and it turns out Larian planned for that too. Visit the same location, and you'll find a merchant called Old Troutman who is selling each Netherstone you dropped for three gold each. Something tells me he had no idea what he had his hands on.

Proxy Gate Tactician then murders poor Old Troutman to see what would happen if both he and the Sahuagin were dead before you drop your stones in the Iron Throne, and somehow Larian accounted for that too. Returning to the same shore, you'll be able to find a bloated fish that has washed up that swallowed all of your Netherstones, making you the most fortunate adventurer in all the Forgotten Realms.

It's an incredible amount of dedication from Larian to ensure every possibility is accounted for, no matter how unlikely, and Proxy Gate Tactician's video reveals a couple more interesting failsafes the devs added to ensure you keep your Netherstones. It;s also a great channel to follow if you like challenge runs and other minor discoveries, as they also recently beat the game as a cat, and went into great detail about Henk's mysterious brother, Honk.

FAQs

What happens if you lost a Netherstone BG3? ›

You're immediately transported to The Absolute, who wastes no time brutally turning you into a Mindflayer along with your entire party. You're then immediately hit with a 'Game Over' screen and are forced to restart from your last save, with nothing but a crippling sense of shame for your efforts.

Should you mutilate the brain in Baldur's Gate 3? ›

For that reason, we suggest freeing and not mutilating this new lifeform. Us is basically a small, temporary advantage in the earliest chapter of the game - a controllable, and pretty powerful (if limited) ally who has a lot of health and some good melee attacks that match many of the standard Baldur's Gate 3 weapons.

Can you save Arabella in Baldur's Gate 3? ›

Save Arabella is a side quest in Baldur's Gate 3 where you're tasked with rescuing a child from Kagha, the leader of the druids in Druids' Grove. She attempted to steal a sacred relic, and is being held captive, so you can offer to save her.

Can you actually remove the parasite baldurs Gate 3? ›

There is currently no way to remove the Illithid Tadpole parasites in Baldur's Gate 3. Does Astarion have a bad ending? ›

Depending on the player's outlook, intentions, and the character they're roleplaying, most of the outcomes can be considered "good". However, reaching the end of Baldur's Gate 3, and having failed to kill Cazador, results in an ending that is objectively terrible for Astarion, no matter the perspective.

Should you destroy the elder brain in BG3? ›

If you fail the roll, you can always load back and try again, or be faced with either destroying or leaving it. If you destroy it, you'll squash it with no chance to fail. Leaving it in the body ends the quest and Us won't join your party.

Can you actually dominate the brain in BG3? ›

It is actually impossible to dominate the Elder Brain during your first encounter with it at the caustic brine lake. The final check is set at DC99. If, bychance, you manage a critical success (natural 20) on this roll, you will still not be able to dominate it.

Can you keep the brain pet in BG3? ›

Can You Keep Us? Unfortunately for the player, US, the intellect devourer, is not a permanent companion. Indeed, it will only accompany the player from the moment they free him from the skull until the ship crashes. Us can also die at any moment during the prologue if the player is not careful with it.

Can you romance Gale BG3? ›

You'll later learn that Gale suffers from a unique condition, and showing empathy towards him is the way to go if you want a successful romance. Unlike most of the other Baldur's Gate 3 character romance options, Gale's romance trajectory progresses in stages.

Agreeing to do so will add the quest to your journal. You should also allow Arabella to stay at your camp, just to ensure nothing happens to her in the meantime.

What happens if you tell Arabella her parents are dead? ›

Should I tell Auntie Ethel about the parasite? ›

While Shadowheart will protest at the idea of you telling Auntie Ethel what's up with you, you'll need to tell her that you're infected with a Mind Flayer parasite. She is immediately concerned and sympathetic, then mentions that she might have something to help back home.

Should I give Volo my eye? ›

Yes, you should let Volo take your eye in Baldur's Gate 3.

Still, successfully sitting through the Volo eye interaction rewards you with Volo's Ersatz Eye, which grants a permanent upgrade that will enable you to see Invisibility within 30 feet.

Could Raphael remove tadpole? ›

Raphael will also make an appearance in Act 3, once you reach Baldur's Gate itself. Upon meeting him in the upper rooms of Sharess Caress in Wyrm's Crossing, Raphael will offer you a deal in exchange for removing the tadpole in your head: he wants the Crown of Karsus.

What happens if you don't save Shadowheart? ›

If you fail to save her on the ship, she'll be in a pod on the beach. If you don't save her there, she appears in the Grove. If you don't talk to her there, she eventually finds your camp and joins you. If you rush to the Goblin Camp without her, the artifact magically comes to your rescue.

What happens if you give the hag your eye in bg3? ›

Your new eye gives you +1 on intimidation, but a disadvantage on perception checks and attacks against hags. Perception is an important stat in Baldur's Gate 3, so it depends on whether or not your party can pick up the slack or not.

Can you sell the netherstones in BG3? ›

Is it possible to get Shadowheart out of the pod? ›

Head to the corpse lying at the other end of the room and pick up the Eldritch Rune. Head back to the console to the right of Shadowheart to use the rune. Place your hand on the console, then use the command to 'Will the pod open'. Unless you roll a critical fail, you should free her.
